Schubert Winterreise

CONCERT

September

Winterreise simply must be heard from time to time. This song cycle—perhaps Schubert’s most beloved—was completed shortly before his death in 1827. What does its haunting final song, Der Leiermann, really tell us? Is it a premonition of his own death, or does it touch on something larger—an endless wandering, humanity in search of itself? It begins with Gute Nacht, followed by a series of powerful, self-contained songs filled with nostalgia, love, and longing. The narrator enters into a dialogue with himself, through the poetic texts of Wilhelm Müller. Especially in the Ruin Church, on Christmas afternoon, this musical journey becomes a special experience—an invitation to wander through Schubert’s hushed and deeply moving world.
