Schubert was a pioneer of the Romantic Austrian music tradition—one that Mahler would embrace and carry into the modern age. Mahler knew Schubert’s work well and even arranged his famous string quartet Death and the Maiden for string orchestra. In Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder, echoes of Schubert’s musical world are clearly heard.
Anton Bruckner, the devout countryman, serves as a bridge between them. His spiritual, monumental music greatly influenced Mahler, who studied with him in Vienna. Though Mahler later took his own path, Bruckner’s influence remained throughout his life.
PENTA’s arrangements of Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder, Blumine, and songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn pay tribute to Mahler and the tradition he continued—just as he honored Schubert before him.
A program inspired by Romantic ideals of love, loss, nature, and the supernatural.
